Body Ideals and the Health-Related Attitudes of Urban Youth

The purpose of this study was to examine the body appearance perceptions and health related attitudes and behaviors of urban middle school students. Two hundred and seventy eight middle school students from two urban middle schools completed a questionnaire packet measuring current and perceived ideal and healthy body size, attitudes toward physical appearance, and attitudes and behaviors regarding physical activity. Body mass index (BMI) data were collected using the Biomeasure Youth Measuring System. According to CDC standards, BMI data indicated that most students were classified as at-risk for overweight. Data analysis revealed positive attitudes toward physical activity and significant relationships existed between BMI and select body appearance, physical activity, and healthy related attitudes and perceptions. The results of the current study are discussed in relation to theoretical and methodological issues in the body appearance and physical activity literature.Похожие книги
