Cultural diversity has become one of the most important and difficult issues for a growing number of companies with employee stock plans such as employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) and stock options. Both in implementing and communicating stock plans and in trying to create a more participative "ownership" culture, companies with diverse work forces can face difficulties and misunderstandings. Over the course of several months, staffers at the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) talked to employee ownership companies and advisors to identify common patterns of response and learn any particular techniques that seemed to work well. The NCEO also consulted with leading diversity experts to gain insights into just how diversity plays out in the workplace.
