Pop art is generally considered to be an American invention ? the New World?s break with the serious artistic attitudes of Europe. In fact, the term was first coined in the mid-1950s by the English art critic Lawrence Alloway, and referred initially not to art but to commercial mass culture. Europop explores the emergence in Europe of a rich and diverse art form that eventually evolved into a worldwide phenomenon. This profusely illustrated survey examines the links between European Pop art and other artistic currents and movements, including Nouveau Realisme, Fluxus and Arte Povera.
