Originally published in the Soviet Union in 1960, the foreword begins:. "Over 25 minorities inhabit the vast expanses of the Far North of Soviet Union. Among them are the Nentsy, Evenks, Dolgans, Nganasans, Selkups, Chukchi, Koryaks and many others, totalling nearly a million people in all. The number of persons belonging to these ethnic groups may vary from several hundred to several hundred thousand."
