A lot of doubts were cast on the effectiveness of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM): whether its dual goal of cost effectiveness and sustainable development– a win-win synergy- was being pursued as promised. This book seeks to clarify the matter by investigating the world’s largest recipient of the CDM, China. Via a thorough examination of the major Chinese settings of regulations and procedures of the CDM- the capacity building assistance as a result of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, the establishment of streamlined CDM procedures, the increased transparency procedures and sound governance of the CDM, the certified emission reductions (CERs) taxes scheme and the national eligibility- this book answers the question of whether the win-win synergy of the CDM is being achieved in China.
