Vologda region in the north of Russia is a famed centre of Russian art and culture. Patterned decorative weaving, embroidery, pottery, niello work in silver, carving and painting on birch-bark and wood were all developed in Vologda Province in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its most famous product, however, is lace. Vologda lace is widely known both in Russia and abroad. In the late nineteenth century, the board of workshops of the Vologda Zemstvo opened a handicraft warehouse in London.
