In compliance with the WTO accession requirements, China enabled foreign-funded locally incorporated banks for the first time at the end of 2006 to offer a competitive range of Renminbi-denominated products to Chinese retail clients. Considering the wealth creation fuelled by the unprecedented growth rate of the Chinese economy in the last decades, the Chinese banking market liberalization may be the biggest opportunity international wealth managers will ever face. The author evaluates this opportunity and examines the Chinese wealth management industry in detail through an extensive literature review, through the application of theoretical models and through a survey with leading financial experts. An emphasis is put on the examination of potential market entry strategies of international financial institutions.
