In the eighteenth century, Russia witnessed a series of brilliant reigns, military victories, the assimilation of new lands, the construction of magnificent residences, firework shows and illuminations and the poverty and suffering of the common people. All this was accompanied by a rapid assimilation of various forms of European culture, the formation of a school of art, the continuation of traditional ethical ideals and the presence of national aesthetic features. The portraits of Dmitry Levitsky, the sculptures of Fedot Shubin and the architectural masterpieces of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli - one phenomenon embraces and links all these aspects of life and art in eighteenth-century Russia.
